My puppy has an open wound on the side of his neck which is infected. I have been flushing the infected area with water and putting a damp warm washcloth on it to try and loosen up the puss. I'm wondering if there's anything else I can do to help treat my dog. I don't have the money to take him to the vet right now and need to figure out what I can do until I get the money. How bout instead of nagging why don't you just help? do any of you know my situation? No, I didn't think so. If you want to know so bad as to why he hasn't gone to the vet yet than ask, don't sit here and criticize me over a situation no one on this website knows ANYTHING ABOUT. I'm a huge animal person and if I can't care for the dog, I'm going to give it to someone who will.

1. If you don't have money for the vet, you have no right to own a puppy. Did you know that you are legally obliged to provide medical care for your pet and it is a crime not to do so? WTF are you doing with a 3-week old puppy anyway? As you cannot care for the puppy, surrender it to a shelter now. Edit: DS: Don't you just love it when the backyard breeders get all upset and start making up excuses?

5. if you don't have the money you shouldn't have the pet right now. see if a friend or relative can take care of the pet for a little while you get the money.

6. Try putting a thin coating of Neosporen on the wound, this may help. However in the long run you need to make a responsible decision. If you can't afford the vet when your dog needs it, you can't afford the dog. Not taking a dog with an open wound and infection to a vet is irresponsible behavior. You either need to figure out how to provide proper care for your dog, or turn it over to a shelter or rescue that will find it a home that can properly care for it. Has your dog been spay/neutered? Does it have all it's shot? Accepting the responsibility of another living thing is not a cheap commitment, when you accept the responsibility you need to be able to afford the necessary costs.

7. Your puppy should still be with its mother! That being said, and since you don't have money for a vet, go to the dollar store, get some antibiotic ointment and put it on the wound three or four times a day. Please, if you cannot afford to take care of your puppy, give it to someone who can or surrender it to a shelter. By the way, if you can't pay for your puppy's care, how are you paying the bill for your internet access? I would suggest rethinking your priorities! You are not being fair to your poor puppy who is relying on you to take care of it!

8. In my suggestion (and I have done this before with my 8 kg Cat) you can give him a TENTH of a human antibiotic for three days to stop any infections spreading. My Cat once had a cat fight and had an open wound on his belly. I didnt have the money for the Vet either and home treated him. I washed his wound with dettol (antiseptic) mixed with warm water, twice a day. and mixed antibitics in his food. He was as good as new in about a week or two. To measure the antibiotic, open the tablet up and sprinkle the dust on a flat surface. half it, then half it again, then half it again AND then again, and thats how much is safe to give him. I hope this helps and good luck!!

9. If you don't have money for a vet, you have no business having puppies. That being said, just because you're an a$$ doesn't mean the pup should suffer. Go to your local farm store and get some penicillin. CALL THE VET (phone calls are free) to find out how much to give and how often.
