I have a 15 year old wire haired terrier mix. where i live its starting to get very hot and i was worried because of his age, etc he might get over heated this summer. i considered taking him to the groomer, but because of his age, he is a bit snappy, and would probably end up biting the groomer because of all the bathing, sheering, etc (he scared of water and loud noises). so stupidly i decided to give him a haircut myself. he seems happy enough but he looks ridiculous. he has all these random bald spots were i accidentally cut his hair too short. he is very energetic for his age, however has a couple of growths that the vet has said are fine. considering all of this, how long will it take for his hair to grow back

1. I have done the same thing with my dog who is also 15.9 years old. It takes about 3 months for my dogs hair to grow back. He's 1/2 Poodle and 1/2 Terrier. Since you are just starting out the Summer in Australia, his hair wont grow as fast as it would in the Winter when they are getting their Winter coats. But in about 2-3 months, it will be back to normal.

3. i have had long haired dogs and I trimmed them with regular wahl hair clippers, but you don't cut it back to the skin, as they will get sunburned. Put sunscreen on any bald or very thin spots.

4. All dogs hair grows at different rate according to health, age, etc. no one can tell you exactly how long, but I would guess a couple to a few months. Also, you shaving his hair made him even hotter. Dogs hair acts as an insulation during summer and winter. Shaving this off only gets rid of their natural insulation making them hotter in summer and colder in winter than they would've been. It can also cause sunburn, which since you said you shaved it so close he's even got bald spots you need to either keep him inside constantly or buy him a sweater to keep him from getting sunburns. Watch his skin, check it multiple times a day for sunburns or irritation. If its reddened and irritated, ask the vet for some ointment. Next time, take the dog to a groomer or your vet (vets can sedate snippy dogs and groom them) and don't go so short. No dog breed needs to be shaved short because of summer or winter. I would leave his hair at least 1-2 inches long his next groom.

6. Depends on the Dog. I have a Pomeranian ho`s hair grows fast, but my Pomeranian mix`s hair grows allot slower (They both get shaved).
