In our family we have two dogs and three cats. We all love and spend time with them equally, but for some reason one of the dogs has clearly chosen me as her favourite. She sleeps in my bedroom, follows me around the house, chooses my lap to sit on when the whole family is sitting down, and she won't go to bed unless I do too. When I'm not at home she frets and whines all night and won't go to sleep. If I tell her to 'sit' she sits, but when other people try she mostly ignores them. I'm the one who feeds/bathes/walks all the animals, but our other dog and two of the cats love everyone equally. One of the cats chose my mum as her favourite. Why do some pets choose their "leader of the pack", even for seemingly no reason? Why don't they all do that? And does anyone know how they decide, when the whole family loves them equally?

1. That`s just the way it is. Some dogs are more intense in their relationships with humans than others, and different personalities react in different ways. Some dogs feel the need to be close to one particular human that they admire and look up to, others don`t. Some "independent natured" dogs don`t give a stuff about any human at all, and just tolerate them to their own advantage. it`s mainly all about compatibility of temperaments. There are other reasons why some dogs get fixated with a particular human. Dog psychology is a fascinating subject and worth reading about. Jmo.

3. Noone can come up with a reason for this but clearly some dogs and cats definitely choose a favorite person and it might not even be anyone they live with or anyone that feeds or plays with them. When I was taking Behavior classes in college, we did some rather unscientific research into why this happens and couldn't come up with any reasons that made any sense, only that some animals really do prefer certain people. This is not true of all dogs and cats. That much we did find out.

4. Not only does everybody need a 'leader', dogs are not daft. They find out who is the provider in their household, and stick with them. Most will go for the person who feeds them, but with hounds, equally it's the person who takes them out to hunt. You may, unintentionally perhaps, given this dog the message that 'he's your favourite'. Much of it is about body language, with dogs.
